Mechanic I - IV, Plant - Wastewater Division

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled trades work to maintain and repair equipment at an assigned wastewater treatment facility and associated pump stations. Incumbents in this classification perform routine preventative maintenance, assist with routine troubleshooting and repairs, have limited discretion, and receive direct oversight and supervision. The level of mechanic will be determined based on experience and qualifications.







Essential Functions:

  • Performs routine preventative and regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs on major industrial equipment in the field and at wastewater utility facilities.

  • Assists in providing routine technical repair service to heavy duty equipment at wastewater utility facilities.

  • Assists in the servicing, repair, calibration, and maintenance.

  • Assists with troubleshooting, monitoring, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and reporting problems.

  • Maintains inventory of parts and equipment.

  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition.

  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.

  • Operates a personal computer and other electronic devices.

  • Utilizes maintenance/work order/department-specific software to issue, receive and complete orders.

  • Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies.

  • Communicates with supervisor, other employees, and other individuals as needed.

  • May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays, Standby Duty or be called out as needed.




Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, with some vocational or technical training preferred; supplemented by one (1) year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Must reside within a radius of Orangeburg, SC that allows for a 30-minute maximum response to call outs.




Specific License or Certification Required:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license.

  • Must complete Collection System Volume I Correspondence course within 18 months of hire or transfer into position.
